Brian Flores suing the NFL, teams for racial discrimination

Former Miami Dolphins head coach is filing a class-action lawsuit against the NFL and three teams. The Dolphins, Broncos, and Giants have all been listed in the lawsuit. The issue stems from racial discrimination during the interview process by the Broncos and the Giants. As for the Dolphins, the suit has to deal with his firing last month.

A text message screenshot is spreading throughout social media between allegedly Bill Belichick and Flores regarding the New York Giants. Flores coached under Bill Belichick dating back to the first Patriot super bowl in the 01′-02′ season.

In the text, Bill was congratulating Brian on successfully getting the position for the Giants. Unknowingly, Bill was texting the wrong Brian. He believed he was texting Brian Daboll, but he was actually texting Brian Flores. Daboll was the offensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills this past season.

Brain Flores, at the time, had yet to interview with the Giants, but the text looked like the Giants already had their guy selected. The NFL has the Rooney Rule in place to insure teams interview at least 1 minority candidate for the head coaching position. If the Giants had already selected their coach before interviewing a minority coach, then they would be technically breaking the rule.

His claims on the Dolphins stems from things Flores was asked to do by the owner Stephan Ross that was detrimental to the team.

  • Ross attempted to incentivize Flores to “Tank.” offering $100,000 for each loss in the 2019 season.
  • Ross attempted to pressure Flores to recruit a “prominent quarterback” at the end of the 2019 season. This would also break NFL rules as well

Flores was fired from the Dolphins after 3 years and leading them to back-to-back winning seasons. The last time the Dolphins had back-to-back winning seasons was the 02′-03′ seasons. The NFL world was stunned that Flores was fired after having such a successful 3 year run.

Flores also made claims against the Broncos. Prior to him getting the job with the Dolphins, Flores interviewed with the Denver Broncos. He claimed that general manager John Elway showed up to the interview an hour late and hungover from the night before. Because of the Rooney Rule, Brian believe that he was interviewed to satisfy the rule instead of being a real candidate for the position.

Statement from Brian. Flores: “God has gifted me with a special talent to coach the game of football, but the need for change is bigger than my personal goals. In making the decision to file the class action complaint, I understand that I may be risking coaching the game I love.”

Only time will tell how this may effect his long-term job opportunities with the NFL.
