Position: Safety
School: Montclair State University
Year: Senior
Measurable: 6’3 185 pounds
Player Overview:
Coming out of Montclair State University is the 6’3 185-pound safety Brennan Ray. Ray is a long rangy safety that can play close to the line or deep into coverage. Ray has gained many accolades throughout his college career; ALL-NJAC second team in 2019, first team in spring 2021 and fall 2021, and All-Region in 2021. Also, Ray has recorded 59 tackles this season along with 2 interceptions and sacks in 2022. His career totals are insane with 261 tackles and 9 interceptions.
Pro:
Ray has a lot of experience on the field and has made an impact. Again, Ray plays safety but has held his own in man coverage as well. Does not look like he sways away from making the big play or hit at any point in the game. Ray has the size to play safety, but also the room to grow into a coverage outside linebacker if asked to put on weight. On film, you can see that he has a natural instinct breakdown a play quick enough to never truly be out of position if the play comes his way.
Cons:
Small school players will always be scrutinized for not playing the best competition week in and week out. Ray would need to stand out in every evaluation period moving forward this offseason. Furthermore, Ray will need to continue to put on weight for the NFL. His position in college shows a safety, but he plays well close to the line more like a linebacker. Ray would need to move a little quicker to be an effective safety in the league.
