Caleb Williams at USC vs Notre Dame

Best College Football Players of 2023: Ranking and Analysis

Now that the NFL Draft is over, it’s never too early to talk about the top-5 best players heading into college football this year.

We’ve taken the time to breakdown who are the elite players. These rankings can include players from every position. Also, teams could have multiple players on this list.

With that being said, lets get started.

5. DE Jared Verse, Florida State

A sure fire 1st round pick in this years NFL Draft, Verse returns to a loaded Florida State roster. The Seminoles have a shot to make it to the playoffs with their roster.

Verse is a really solid defensive end that can get off blocks or hold his side of the line. He has quick feet and quick hands at the point of attack. Verse has a motor that never seems to end. In big moments, Verse plays up to billing as a top NFL prospect.

Ultimately, if Verse is able to remain healthy, he could be the best and the first defensive lineman drafted in 2024.

4. TE Brock Bowers, Georgia

Arguably the best tight end since he was a freshman in 2021. Bowers is the modern day tight end; fast, quick, strong, and can catch anything.

Bowers was Stetson Bennett’s favorite target during their back-to-back championship run. It can be said that without Bowers, Georgia might not have won a championship.

In 2022, Bowers caught 63 passes for 942 yards and 7 touchdowns. If he was eligible to leave this year, Bowers would have been a top-10 pick.

3. QB Drake Maye, North Carolina

Most consider Drake Maye to e the second best quarterback heading into next season. At the moment, I can not argue with that assumption.

Maye has great pocket presence and he’s a gamer. A gamer in college football can beat the best teams on any given Saturday.

However, we will see how great he truly is since he won’t be able to surprise anyone. Maye recorded 4,321 yards passing, 38 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions in 2022.

2. WR Marvin Harrison Jr., Ohio State

The son of the Hall of Fame receiver Marvin Harrison is as elite of a receiver as any to come from Ohio State. He is long and very strong.

Like his father, Harrison Jr has the ability to make miraculous catches. In 2022, we saw Harrison pull in some throws that were clearly bad passes.

Harrison Jr. will be the receiver off the board in next years NFL Draft. Needless to say, the Harrison will have to break in an new quarterback this season.

He finished 2022 with 77 receptions, 14 touchdowns, and 1,263 receiving yards.

1. QB Caleb Williams, USC

Williams left Oklahoma to follow Lincoln Riley to USC, and it has turned out to be a great decision. Williams has the physical traits but also the mentality to lead.

What makes Williams a great quarterback is his ability to will his team to a victory. That aspect of his game makes him the best player returning. Williams is the closet thing to Patrick Mahomes in terms of play making ability.

Williams threw for 4,537 yards passing, 42 touchdowns, and only 5 interceptions.

Needless to say, by mid-season we could see a completely different group of players on this list.
