Bucs Camp Battles: Kyle Trask vs Baker Mayfield

Kyle Trask vs Baker Mayfield

There are many position battles happening around the NFL, but the most interesting competition is Kyle Trask vs Baker Mayfield for the Tampa Bay Buccaneer’s starting quarterback spot. The winner will take over for the great Tom Brady.

Many expected for the Bucs to promote 2021 second round pick, Kyle Trask. Trask sat behind Brady, studying the greatest quarterback in NFL history. Needless to say, the Bucs did not like that idea of handing the team over to him.

One month after Brady announced his retirement, the Bucs signed former 2018 #1 overall pick Baker Mayfield. Mayfield has bounced around the league since his stint in Cleveland. In Carolina he did not show much improvement, while in LA he showed moments.

Although Mayfield is new to the team, he is considered the frontrunner for the job. His experience and moments of improvement as a Ram gives him the edge.

Baker’s career numbers have him as at 61% completion percentage.

What wrong with Trask?

There’s a feeling that Trask is a bust. Yes, the term is given to a high draft pick that flops. Although he was a second-round pick, Trask was drafted to backup Tom Brady and prepare for this very moment.

Unfortunately, Trask and the Bucs organization did not prepare nearly enough for Tom Brady’s retirement. In Trask only appearance in a game, he went 3 for 9 for 23 yards. Bringing in Bakers gives the Bucs an insurance policy just in case Trask can’t measure up. However, there’s a chance that Trask wins the starting job this summer.

If Trask wins the job, the Bucs get the chance to see Trask operate the offense for a full season. Whether or not he is good or bad, the Bucs get to evaluate their future with him. Failure for Trask likely means the Bucs will draft high in the 2024 NFL Draft.
