New broke recently by The Athletic that the city of San Francisco is looking to lock down one of the 2 expansion teams the WNBA would like to add.
WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert expressed in numerous interviews that she wanted to expand the league past its current 12-teams. In recent years, interest in women’s sports has started to grow and the WNBA is taking full advantage of the additional viewers.
Ultimately, the reason why the Bay Area drew the interest of a possible WNBA expansion team is because of the steady fan base the area has for women’s basketball. Stanford and Cal University are two programs in the area that have helped establish a great women’s basketball fanbase.
If the deal is finalized, the new WNBA team will play in the Chase Center. The home of the Golden State Warriors.
Needless to say, this expansion is great for the league and its future players. The last expansion team was the Atlanta Dream back in 2008.
